NAMM 2014: WOOF OR DOOF FROM JBL?

When nobody was looking, did they change NAMM to the National Association of Monitor Manufacturers? The amount of new studio monitor products we’re seeing this year… JBL Professional announced the new LSR310S powered studio subwoofer – optimised for use with the JBL 3 Series studio monitors. Looking like something Ned Kelly might knock up in the barn, the LSR310S subwoofer extends the low-frequency response of a Series 3 system into the 20 Hz range and includes a selectable XLF Extended Low Frequency setting that emulates the augmented low frequency response heard in the dance club environment. Driven by an integrated 200 Watt Class D power amplifier, a 10-inch high excursion woofer works with JBL’s patented Slip Stream Port to deliver a low-frequency response below 27 Hz at a peak output of 113 dB SPL. Inputs for the LSR310S are balanced XLR and 6.5mm TRS, with a selectable input sensitivity switch and three crossover settings at 80Hz, XLF and External. The special XLF setting activates a 120Hz High Pass Filter in conjunction with a low frequency tuning that approximates the tuning used in club playback systems. Using this setting, the bass output more than doubles, which could be alarming except JBL assures us that the newly developed woofer/amp combination with protective limiting allows the 310S to produce extended bass output continuously without failure.
